Like many local loyalty programs, it started simply. Members carried paper cards. Each visit was marked manually. Rewards were tracked by hand. An iPad sat behind the bar. Members had no visibility into their progress. Staff had to toggle between customers and data entry. The system worked, but it did not scale.\n\nThen, in the summer of 2021, everything changed.\n## The Challenge\nMy wife was ordering a round of beers when she noticed the bartender updating the spreadsheet. She asked what she was doing. When she learned how the Mug Club was being tracked, she said something simple.\n\n“My husband could build an app for that.”\n\nAt that point, I had never built or deployed a mobile app. But I had deep experience building systems and workflows in Airtable. Instead of asking how close they were to the next milestone, members could open the app and see it instantly.\n\nI also included events, beer menus, and food truck schedules by loading the brewery’s website inside an in app browser. It worked, but it was not elegant.\n\nStill, in December 2021, the first version launched for the 2022 Mug Club.\n\nIt was an immediate hit.\n\nBartenders saved time. Patrons loved tracking their progress. Instead of loading menus and schedules from the website, I pushed them directly via APIs from Airtable.
